Effects of Parent’s Debts on Children

Parents who wish their children well and want to see them enjoy lives ought to deal with the consequences of their past sins properly. They must not allow devil to transfer these consequences to their children. Sin is debt to Satan. Only Jesus could pay the debt of sin. Parents must let Jesus settle the debt of their sins in order to allow their children to prosper.

For instance, when Ahab and Jezebel killed Naboth, they entered into a debt with Satan, thereby putting their children in Satan’s bondage.

“And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Jabots the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to possess it”

(1 Kings 21:16-18).

King Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, conspired, killed Naboth, and sowed evil into their family. Ahab rose and went to Naboth’s vineyard to possess his land. As he entered into the vineyard, God sent Elisha to curse him. Elijah met him in the vineyard and rebuked him saying, “Hast thou killed and taken possession? In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood.”

“And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? In addition, thou shall speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, sin the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. 21Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, 22And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin.  23And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, the dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. 24Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.  25But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the LORD, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up. 26And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel”

(1 Kings 21:19, 21-26).

Ahab and Jezebel’s sins turned into a bad inheritance that they passed on to their offspring. As a result, Ahab was cursed, his descendants were stolen from him, and his family was alienated. Evil judgment hung over the lives of his numerous children. All of Ahab’s offspring had to die because he failed to adequately atone for the effects of his wickedness while he was still living.

The only way to settle a consequence of sin is through genuine repentance and receiving Jesus, who makes restitution for each member of the family. Confession and forsaking of all sins and living a life of holiness are extremely important.

“Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judges the fatherless, and pleads for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool”

(Isaiah 1:16-18).

However, Ahab humbled himself before God when he heard of God’s judgment upon him. Because of that, God deferred His judgment and transferred it to Ahab’s children.

“And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? Because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house”

(1 Kings 21:27-29).

It is interesting to notice that none of Ahab’s family members joined him in repenting as he rented his garments, placed sackcloth on his flesh, went gently, and fasted. He was therefore kept to himself and spared the embarrassing and impending repercussions. Sadly, his family will be affected by his curse. He was spared the punishment for his murderous sin, and his children continued to live in a horrible world. It’s so sad!

“And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window. And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master? And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, who is on my side? Who? In addition, there looked out to him two or three eunuchs. And he said, Throw her down. Therefore, they threw her down and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot. And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter. And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel: And the carcass of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel”

(2 Kings 9:30-37).

Consider how Ahab had peace and stayed out of war for three years because of his repentance (1 Kings 20:1-3, 29-40). Nevertheless, immediately after his death, the demon in-charge of his family’s evil consequences was let loose. Demons broke the family’s hedge of protection and invaded the once protected family of Ahab. Jehu was anointed to overthrow Jezebel and take over the kingdom. He threw Jezebel down from the window. Her blood splashed on the walls and on the horses, and it was trodden under the foot.

1And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab’s children, saying, 6Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up. 7And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezreel. 8And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons. In addition, he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning. 10Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spoke concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spoke by his servant Elijah. 11So Jehu slew all that remained of the house f Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining”

(2 Kings 10:1, 6-8, 10- 11).

It is very important that as a father or mother, when you break the hedge of your protection through sin, you must not allow your sin to put your family in bondage of Satan. Otherwise, your children would suffer terrible consequences. Repent of all the sins you committed before and after your marriage. Confess and forsake them and invite Jesus to take away every consequence of your past sins. Then make sure that you guide your children in the way of the Lord.
