How to Pray to God

Prayer is a means of communication with God. It is your radio station to broadcast everything and anything you know and how you feel. It is access to God. Prayer is a remarkable privilege. We find instances of men who prayed throughout the pages of our Bibles. Even Jesus, the Son of God, prayed! Many Christians struggle with not knowing how to pray or even how to begin. Now, how do you pray?

As a believer, you must acknowledge the fact that the moment you come to pray, you are talking to your father. One who knows everything, including all the secret things you may want to hide. At one point in my life, I realized that it was foolishness to try to hide things from Him who knows what I’m going to say even before I conceived the idea in the first place.

A lot of people come to God and tell Him only the things they feel He should know. Whom are you keeping the rest for? He knows you more than you know yourself. Ensure that there is nothing in you that will displease him while talking with him by confessing sin you have committed as you pray.

Again, talk to God with reverence and respect, and be open to him with all sincerity.

“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly”

Matthew 6:6

Coming to God in prayer is like making an appointment. It is not something you do casually, in a haste or while distracted. Some people can be on their phones and claim that they are praying. Some engage in conversations while supposedly praying. If you are serious, God will know.

Therefore, when you come to God in prayer, do not rush or be in haste. You have to prepare yourself and make sure that nothing in you will turn God back or cancel the appointment. God is ever ready to hear from you, and he will not turn deaf ears to your prayers.

While all these apply, the most important thing before you pray is to make sure that God is your father, and you, his son, in truth and in spirit.

“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you”

John 16:23
