Is Marriage a Covenant?

For better or for worse, richer or poorer, sick or healthy, to love and cherish… We’ve all heard these words repeated at weddings, and if you’re married, you’ve probably said them yourself! When a man and a woman say “I do,” they are promising each other in front of the Lord that they will remain together until one of them dies.

The marriage vow is the verbal expression of a mental and emotional lifelong commitment. That is God’s plan. This concept encompasses the richest fulfillment of the promise of marriage. When you say in the vow, “from this day forward,” this is not a promise that can be broken, hence the idea that marriage is a covenant.

The beauty of every marriage is unending happiness and togetherness, and if you want this in your marriage, you have to first understand the covenant of marriage before going into it. A lot of times, problems arise from choosing the wrong partner. Many have rushed into marriage out of desperation, the need to measure up, and a host of other reasons without first consulting with God. As a result of this, they now have to accept whatever the devil and his agents are offering.

Broken Covenant

A covenant is a legal contract that binds you and your partner for life on earth. A marriage covenant is a lifetime covenant. In this particular covenant, God does not expect it to be broken. Once this covenant is broken, every other covenant with God concerning your life will equally be affected. A broken covenant affects children, born and yet to be born. The effects of a covenant marriage can last for generations, providing a model for those who come after us on how to build not just a house, but a home where Christ is honored and people are truly cared for.

When you have limited understanding about marriage, you are likely to break this covenant, and once you break the covenant of marriage, it destroys your affection and your character. Having an unforgiving spirit, being inconsiderate, and being unmerciful are some of the things that can break your marriage. Allowing this to linger on will, overtime, make you immune to the consequences of your actions. But if you are a keeper of a marriage covenant, you will always show mercy and forgiveness to your partner.

“Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them”

Romans 1:31-32
