Marriage: A Journey of Love and Sacrifice

God expects us to love one another the way He loved us and sent His Son to die for our sins. He expects nothing less. God’s love passes all understanding and remains above all reproach and so He accepts you as His child to model His character and love.

As soon as we become Christians, we become God’s beloved children. He invites us to share in His love, which we should not limit to only those we love but to all of humanity. God’s love must be evident in our homes and places of work.

As God’s dear child, you must be obedient to Him in order to set examples with your life. As such, you cannot return to your former lifestyle but instead remain holy, even in your conversations.

“As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, be ye holy; for I am holy. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot”

1 Peter 1:14-19

Your main duty as God’s child is to reproduce the love of your Father in heaven here on earth. When you love your neighbor, the world will see that you are a child of your Heavenly Father. Jesus demonstrated His love for us when He died on the cross of Calvary. This love was not abstract; instead, it was concrete. He died on the cross in order to save us. Therefore, the love that exists in your family must be concrete, not abstract.

Christ’s love for us is tangible, and a husband and wife that claim to love each other must demonstrate practical care for each other. Just as Christ loved you, carried your cross, and sacrificed himself for you, likewise, there is always a cross to carry in marriage, which varies from family to family. Do not leave your marriage because of the weight of the cross that you bear. When you do so, you are no longer a disciple of Christ.

Jesus’s love compelled him to make this great sacrifice for you. Similarly, you should make every effort to keep your marriage for the sake of love. We must model the kind of love Christ had for us in order to transform our marriages. Loving God with all your heart will enable you to love your spouse practically, regardless of their shortcomings. Jesus served everyone equally with love and compassion and this should inspire you to serve rather than desire to be served.

“He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded”

John 13:4-5
