How to Be Consistent in Your Walk With God

Inconsistency has to be one of the most challenging attributes there is. Whether it’s not being able to keep to your routine, your schedule, or constantly pushing back activities that you’ve promised to carry out, at one point or another in your life, you must have struggled with being inconsistent at something. Sadly, our Christian lives are not spared from this as well.

Some say that living a consistent Christian life is difficult and so many believers have been seen blowing hot and cold when it comes to their walk with God. There is an inconsistency in a person’s belief and devotion if they claim to serve God but do not obey his commands. Consistency is required in a Christian’s relationship with the Lord. God intended for us to walk with Him and for us to have a relationship with Him, but this epileptic lifestyle often leaves a dent in our relationship with Him.

Our inconsistencies are most often our faults. Prior to the fall, Adam and Eve would walk and converse with God in the Garden of Eden, but after they sinned, they became embarrassed and hid when they heard Him approaching.

Their sin separated humanity from God. But thankfully, Jesus came to offer us forgiveness and restoration. Your Christian life starts with the knowledge of salvation and the beginning of a lifelong journey that demands walking in holiness before the Lord. Sometimes, in a bid to please man and not God, we make compromises that defile our walk with God. We are required to be holy, abstaining from all corrupt practices to the end.

Hindrances to your walk with God

  1. Engaging oneself in unclean discussions and plans
  2. Immoral text messages
  3. Competition with worldly people and worldly standards (2 Corinthians 10:2).
  4. Allow strangers to devour your strength through compromise and conformity with the world and its systems (Hosea 7:8-9).
  5. Grieving God’s Spirit by disobedience and resistance against His word and revealed will (1 Thessalonians 5:19, Ephesians 4:30).
  6. Engaging in secret sins and besetting sins (Psalms 19:12-13, 66:18, Hebrews 12:1).
  7. Self indulgence and personal ambition (Philippians 3:18-21; Luke 12:15-21).

IIn all honesty, you cannot consistently walk with God if you are still engaging in any type of sin, and this is part of God’s demand in your walk with Him. Like us, Enoch lived in a defiled generation. He was a family man with wicked people around him, but regardless, he refused to compromise his faith in God (Hebrews 11:5). He was heavenly focused and met the conditions required for walking with God.

Conditions for Walking with God

  • You must have faith in God to walk with him and be ready to please him at all cost (Hebrews 11:5).
  • You must be ready to agree with God and disagree with all that disagrees with him, including your flesh (Amos 3:3).
  • You must forsake your old ways of life to embrace the new way of life according to the scriptures (Ephesians 4:22-24).
  • You must be dead to sin, alive to righteousness, and reconcile men to God (2 Corinthians 5:15, 17, 19).
  • You must be willing to keep God’s commandments, love God, and show love to others (John 14:23).
  • It is impossible to walk with God with a sinful nature in you. There must be a cleansing.
  • Repentance is required, and there must be complete obedience and full devotion to God.

The Christian life is quite simple, yet a lot of people find it difficult to get a hold of. A lot of times, you do not need to keep struggling to be consistent. You only need to surrender to God and allow Him to lead you while you follow Him.

Tips to Walking with God Consistently

  • “Break every unprofitable relationship” (Judges 16:1-31).
  • Walk in the spirit and walk in the light (Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 5:8-11).
  • Watch your life; be sober and vigilant all the time against things that defile your thoughts (Joshua 1:8, Ezekiel 3:1, Mark 14:38, 1 Peter 5:8).
  • Surrender all things to God as a sacrifice and submit to His leadership and control (Philippians 3:7-10, 13-14).
  • Be prayerful with unwavering faith; study God’s word; live a consistent Christian life (1 Thessalonians 4:11, Joshua 1:8, Ezekiel 3:1, 2 Timothy 2:15, 1).
