Sin: Are There Consequences?

The pleasures of sin are sweet, but its consequences can be quite grave. Sin has a crippling effect on the life of a believer. Because he is just and deserves our obedience, God has set high standards for us. As a result, when we commit sin, we fall short of God’s standards. Jesus died for the sake of our sins! So what really happens, though, when we do sin?

Separation from God

Sin has many consequences, but the worst is separation from God, which is eternal death. Death is the cessation of life. While physical death is the separation of the soul and spirit from the body, spiritual death is a separation from God. It is possible to be alive physically on earth while you are dead before God spiritually. When you are separated from God, you experience a break in your relationship with God. There can be no communication between you and him. Adam and Eve were separated from God the day they ate fruit from the forbidden tree. As a result, God cursed them, and they became enemies of God.

Self Destruction

Sin is disobedience to God’s Word. It is breaking God’s commandment. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah were some of the most sinful cities that existed, and they were wicked. Eventually, God later destroyed their cities and all their people with brimstone and fire. Lot and his family lived there, and God knew them. He sought to rescue them and gave specific instructions not to look back as they left the city. However, Lot’s wife disobeyed and became a pillar of salt. She lost her life through her act of disobedience.

When you go against God’s word and sin, you empower the devil to take charge of your life. You invite afflictions and defeat in your life, among many other things.

Finally

Refusing to repent when you have sinned is the worst possible mistake you can make. When you do this, you unknowingly hold yourself captive and increase your punishment. The best remedy is true repentance and forsaking of all sins. Acknowledge your sins today, confess and forsake them, and watch as every problem in your life falls off eventually.
