Raising Godly Children

God takes the issue of raising and training of Children very seriously. Before Abraham gave birth to his only son, Isaac, God knew he was going to train him well.

“And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way. And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him”

(Genesis 18:16-19).

God does not hide His secret from those who plan for the continued existence of future generations in accordance to His will and covenant. Failure to guide and train your children in godly ways is total failure, even when you are successful in every other areas of life. Parents who take the issue of training their children lightly are destroying the continued existence of the future generations.

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord”

(Ephesians 6:1-4).

The first persons a child meets, after birth, are parents. Therefore, parents have lots of work to do with regard to training children in godly ways. Training a child in the way of the Lord is nurturing a mighty and godly nation. Parents that lose any child to the devil have lost a mighty nation and have denied a generation of their blessings.

It is important for parents to have a strong relationship with God in order for them to effectively guide their children in following God’s ways. If a child does not adhere to God’s commandments, it is likely due to a lack of proper guidance from their parents. God desires parents who are committed to teaching their children and household how to obey and honor Him. Children should also obey and honor their parents, as this is their first duty as a godly child. Failure to do so can result in a lack of success in other areas of life and potentially even an early death.

Many children experience premature deaths of joy, peace, happiness, etc., in their lives while they still live. They also witness God’s promises being fulfilled in the lives of obedient children, while they experience horrendous things in their own lives. When a child is not under direct care and government of his parents, the child is then expected to obey the people that are taking care of him or her.

Children cannot know what God has commanded them to do until someone tells them. They cannot discern the Scriptures easily as adults. That is why they need qualified persons to teach and guide them. Parents are responsible for teaching and guiding their children rightly. Any child that comes under your care automatically becomes part of your responsibility. Thus, it is your duty to train that child in the way of the Lord for you will give account of that child before God.

“My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life”

(Proverbs 6:20-23).

“But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God”

Parents who train their children well depend on God always and shun iniquities. They accept Christ as their Lord and Savior, and always followed His footsteps in order to lead their children in the ways that please God. They master God’s Word and pledge obedience to it.

When a child misses the training on the knowledge of God and His Word at a very tender age, that child has missed the vital part of his or her life. Children retain over 80% of what they see, hear and do. That is why it is easier to build up a child than to repair damages done on such child. Parents that failed to train their children at their tender stage of life does great disservice to those children. It is the responsibility of parents to teach their children about God’s promises and commandments. It is easier for children to forsake God when they do not understand the consequences of doing so. God cannot spare parents who allow or aid their children to die in their sins. Children are futuristic leaders and thus must be nurtured in truth and justice.
