The Roles Of a Virtuous Woman

A wife’s submission is not a favor to the husband. It is God’s command. Therefore, she should submit in love, not as a slave. She should do it without grudge in her heart. She should love her husband with respect and treat him with honor and dignity. Sometimes, your husband may fail to meet up with his duties towards you. Nevertheless, that does not empower you to fail in your own duty towards him. Spiritually, a wife submits not unto the husband per se, but unto the Lord.

“But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement”

(1 Peter 3:4-6).

In the ancient times, great and holy women of God also submitted to their husbands. They believed that if they trusted God’s Word and submitted, God would touch their husbands. They did it and it worked for them. God has not changed. If you submit to your husband as unto the Lord, you cannot regret doing so. Sarah did not obey Abraham because Abraham was good but because it was God’s’ commandment for wives to do so.

“And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter. So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women. And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women. Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it. And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti”

(Esther 2:7-10, 17).

Esther was a woman of honor and very great. Her greatness was based on how she loved God, his prophets and her husband. She studied her husband and knew how and when to approach him. She was more spiritual and greater than her husband was but she respected him.

A good wife should emulate Esther. Even when she provides for her family, she would never publicize it. She takes care of her husband, her household and the people of God around her. She cannot do anything without her husband’s permission.

A good wife is very industrious, spiritual and strong. She would not make a decision without obtaining her husband’s permission respectfully. Mary, the mother of Jesus was never a talkative. She never boasted to her husband or disrespected him. An angel of God empowered her and the Holy Spirit overshadowed her to conceive the Savior of the whole world.
