Obedience in Your Place of Work

God has always been particular about obedience from the beginning of time. He encourages obedience not just to him but in all our dealings with other men, masters and servants alike. You cannot follow one while ignoring the other. Employees are to obey their masters. Obedience must come from the heart as unto the Lord, who rewards every good service. Obedience to the masters by the servants should not be with eye service, as men pleasers do, but with singleness of heart, fearing God.

“Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye service, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And what soever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men”

Colossian 3:22-23

While at work…

As a believer, your obedience also extends to your place of work. You must obey the stipulated rules and regulations at your place of work and not be pretentious about it. Many times, we are unfaithful in carrying out our responsibilities, or we do them unwillingly, while still quoting God’s word and claiming His promises in vain without following simple rules in our workplaces or organizations.

Wherever you work, do it as if you are working for the Lord. Do not be guided by inequality or injustice that may prevail. Serve with total commitment and do not change your behavior because the Lord gives reward at his appointed time. You are only allowed to take a stand against any rule when it contradicts God’s word. When you choose to obey God instead of man, you will receive blessings in and outside the city.

Today, where money is the equivalent of almost any and every service, you might be reluctant to obey rules and regulations at your workplace because you are not being paid your worth. Nevertheless, even when you are paid less and overworked, continue to be obedient and faithful to God, who sees and knows all things. God searches the heart, knows when you are working and when you are not, and will judge all your works.

At some point in your career, you will seek to surpass the level you are already at. There will be opportunities for promotions and progress, among others. These will not come your way if you are known for producing mediocre work. Likewise, with God when you fail to keep instructions on handwork, obedience, and faithfulness at your place of work.

When you carry out your responsibilities in the office as instructed, God will answer your prayers for progress, blessing, and promotion. Obedience brings honor, so when God sees your heart, he will see to it that you are rewarded duly.
