Overcoming Besetting Sin

You may have struggled with sin for a while now and it almost seems impossible to break away. Fortunately, no matter how powerful a besetting sin may be, the grace to overcome it is made available by the death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works”

Titus 2:11-14

The flesh is one of the leading factors of sin. It represents the whole system of our corrupt nature as it breaks forth into many forms of disobedience. The works of the flesh are essentially associated with sin, defilement, and evil. To live in the flesh or produce fleshly works is the exact opposite of who a Christian is.

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envying’s, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”

Galatians 5:19-21

If you live above the works of the flesh, temptation will be powerless against you. It is only when there is sin within that the enemy can enter through the open door created by sin.

Living above Sin

To live above sin is to obtain holiness. “Holiness” is not the absence of problems but the absence of sin. Nevertheless, with holiness, you can endure afflictions with joy until you are able to overcome them now or later (Hebrew 12:1-3, 14). To reject a holy life is to despise God. In the same way, to reject a life of holiness is to disagree with God’s will.

Therefore, if you are a sinner, you can overcome sin. If you are a backslider, you can also overcome the spirit of backsliding. Even as a believer, these sins can attack you , and so it is left to you to locate and overcome them. It is the will of God that man live above sin, and because of this, it is possible. God, in turn, expects absolute holiness from you. Living a holy life is not optional; it is rather mandatory. Holiness is required of every believer who wishes to enter heaven in these last days.

In order to obtain holiness, you must lay aside every weight of doubt and unbelief, every fear of Satan and sin, and forget all the past defeats you have suffered at the hands of Satan and sin. Lay aside whatever sin has reigned in your family, nation, and the entire world. And move forward in faith and patience this time, trusting God for your perfection and full deliverance from sin. God has promised to grant you the highest level of deliverance, so that you may serve Him without fear in holiness and in righteousness, all the days of your life here on earth, and we all know that God does not fail to keep his promises.
