The Role of Parents in Their Children’s Lives

We are all aware that God watches over our children when we are away. He is a good God. But occasionally, when our children go to school, we might experience anxiety. Parents who are trusting God for a child must be ready to obey God’s commandments concerning training their child. No one should pray or wish to have a child whom he would not bring up in the way of God.

The sad reality about raising kids is that we actually have no control over whether or not they will choose the large gate that leads to destruction or the narrow gate that leads to life. Parenting a preadolescent or a teenager will humble you and show you how reliant you are on God if earlier experiences in life have not done so.

However, your main responsibility as parents is to not only give birth or feed your children with natural food; it also involves you leading them back to God. When you fail to introduce your children to Jesus Christ, you have failed them. As parents, you are not to forget God and His teachings. Instead, you are to teach your children the ways of the Lord so that they will live long on earth. Anything less than this is a failure on your part.

“Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittet in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth”

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

Parents must inculcate the Word of God in the hearts, souls, and memories of their children. This will imprint a consciousness of the Word of God in their minds, such that even when they are far away from you, they will be able to say, “My father and mother taught me to do this.”

The Word of God is the best legacy you can bequeath to your children, from one generation to another. This is why chastening them early in life, when there is still hope; when they have ears to hear and eyes to see God’s goodness, is critical. Because at this time, they tend to imitate everything you do, including the positive and negative ones.

“Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying”

Proverbs 19:18

“6Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. 15Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. 17Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge”

Proverbs 22:6, 15, 17

In the absence of the Word of God, foolish actions and decisions will continue to rule and reign in the hearts of your children. But with God’s Word, their hearts can be rid of evil and their foolishness replaced with divine knowledge. While they are in school, you can be rest assured that they have the Word of God to lean on, and while you pray for them, God responds and provides for their needs in turn.
