True Repentance and Its Evidences

The Nature of Repentance

Those days, our pastors challenged us with the word of God to prove or bring forth the fruits of repentance.

‘Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire’ (Matthew 3:8-10).

False Ministers and True Repentance

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy’ (Proverbs 28:13).

The Evidence of True Repentance

  • Repentance is turning away from sin, turning of heart against sin, change of heart concerning sin.
  • Without true repentance, you cannot believe in Christ to be saved.
  •  Mental acknowledgement of Christ is not faith in Christ. The heart that clings to sin cannot truly exercise faith in Christ.

‘And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry’ (Isaiah 5:6-7).

  • To have faith in Christ is to put your complete trust in Him for forgiveness, peace and reconciliation with God.
  • When you repent and believe in Christ, you are saved. To be secured in Christ, you must continue following Christ, obeying His words.
  •  There is no security for the rebellious or sinning Christian.
  •  The foundation of security is the grace of God and the evidence of grace is continual victory over sin, the flesh and the world.
  •  True repentance produces always the fruits of righteousness and new life.

‘I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes’ (Job 42:5).
