Do You Have to Be Alone?

In the beginning, everything God created was good. He looked at them and found that they were good. Until he saw it. “It is not good that the man should be alone.” In a world before Genesis 3, these words did not seem to belong there. But they emphasize the importance of a woman to a man.

Marriage is not a construct of society. People did not create the institution of marriage. It originated with God. One of the main reasons a couple decides to live together for the rest of their lives is love. While love is beautiful, the bliss that is marriage was designed with a purpose in mind. Actually, there are several of them, and every couple who wishes to get married must understand this. Here are some of the reasons God had in mind while creating marriage:

God established marriage as a way to maintain purity in the family, community, and even nation. Contrary to what you might think, God is aware of your vulnerability as a person—after all, he made you! Therefore, it is not his intention for you to engage in immoral sexual behavior at will or pursue other people to satiate your sexual cravings. God declared that being alone was not good for you. Therefore, regardless of any flaws you may find in your spouse as your marriage develops, you must agree with God that it is not good for you to be alone.

There is no provision for sex outside marriage. Your wife or husband is the only legal person permitted to have sex with you. Having sexual relations with anyone outside of your marriage defies, pollutes, and contaminates not only your body but also the church and the nation. As a couple, it is your duty to protect each other so that neither of you will have any reason to seek pleasure or satisfaction elsewhere.

You were also intended to find fulfillment and completion in marriage. When God matches you with a partner, he will enhance you when you give him a chance in your life. You may not see the whole picture at once, but you and your partner should complement each other. This is what God gives you! Where your weakness begins, you will find strength in them. Likewise, when their strength fails them, yours will be there to strengthen them.

Marriage was also designed for procreation. Children are a big and important part of a marriage. They are a blessing! They play a vital role in the continuation of society. God has given us the gift of reproduction to produce new life. Marriage is the best place to rear children, nurture and care for them.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth”

Genesis 1:27-28

“Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table”
