The Bible promises us that we will endure difficulties and afflictions in this world, but it also urges us to have hope since Jesus has conquered the world (John 16:33). However, recognizing the truth does not always make it simple to hold steady in the face of adversity. Understanding the nature of opposition.
Opposition may take many forms, including persecution, uncertainty, temptation, and even internal conflicts. It often attempts to shatter our faith and steer us away from God’s plan for our life. In 1 Peter 5:8-9a (NIV), the apostle Peter advises us to “be alert and sober-minded.” Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, hunting for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in your faith, equipped with the armor of God for spiritual warfare.”
Anchored in God’s Word
The cornerstone of standing steady in faith is to be grounded in God’s word. Psalm 119:105 (NIV) says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” When we face resistance, we must hold to Scripture’s promises and realities. The New International Version (NIV) of Hebrews 10:24-25 “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” In times of adversity, a supporting community of Christians can provide Christian perseverance, encouragement, accountability, and prayer support.
Maintaining Focus on the Prize
When faced with adversity, it is easy to lose sight of the greater picture. However, Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV) tells us, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.” And let us run with endurance the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Keeping our attention on Jesus and the eternal prize that awaits us allows us to overcome opposition and remain steadfast in our faith.

When faced with adversity, our natural reaction may be to counterattack or retain animosity. However, Jesus offers us another method. In Matthew 5:44 (NIV), Jesus states, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Responding with love and forgiveness not only shows Christ’s character, but it also neutralizes the enemy’s techniques, allowing God to work in hearts and circumstances.
