Repentance: What does it mean?

A lot of people are scared of the word repentance. Some others don’t understand what it really means. Repentance is turning away from sin and Satan and returning to God, which leads to a sincere change of mind, purpose, and action. A change in the way you think leads to a change in the way you live.

It is easy to decide to turn away from your sins and even easier to fall back into them, especially if you do not understand what it means to truly repent. A repented person does not live his life in disobedience to God’s Word. Instead, he abhors sin and commits to righteousness.

“He that committed sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remained in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother”

1 John 3:8-10

You must know that the moment you make the decision to turn away from your sins, the devil and his agents will seek to stop you. They will entice you with everything possible to dissuade you and make you see the fleeting pleasures living in sin brings. This is why, after repentance, you are to resist Satan and his works, as well as anything that opposes God’s righteousness.

You need to be committed to this new way of living by obeying God’s word and living by it. When you fail to resist the devil and allow him to cause a separation between you and God, you become his slave yet again, and a potential candidate for premature death.

Here, you have a clear choice as to whom to follow, and God cannot force you. You may have indicated an interest in turning away from your sins, but if you truly desire to be in Christ and remain in Him, you must seek God for help and resist the devil and his schemes. If you remain faithful to Jesus, you cannot die prematurely.

“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”

John 10:10
