“Divine Authority and Its Consequences”

The Unyielding Walls of Jericho

There was once a city called Jericho, and the walls surrounding it was too tall and strongly built that no scientific method and human can destroy the walls. They enjoyed perfect protection from their enemies because of those walls. They went to bed without closing their doors because they trusted the city security walls.

But one day at the decree of God, that walls suddenly collapsed and fell flat. The children of Israel entered into the city and at God’s decree, they destroyed all the inhabitants, both old and young, with the edge of the sword except a harlot called Rehab.

“And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword. But Joshua had said unto the two men that had spied out the country, go into the harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye sware unto her. And the young men that were spies went in, and brought out Rehab, and her father, and her mother, and her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred, and left them without the camp of Israel. And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. And Joshua saved Rehab the harlot alive, and her father’s household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.”

(Joshua 6:21-25).

The Fate of Achan and the Power of God’s Decree

No one, not even all nations of the world put together, can successfully oppose the decree of God. At God’s decree, a man popularly known and called Achan in the army of Israel died in one day with all the members of his family.

“So, Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it. And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD and Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor and Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones and they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So, the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day”

(Joshua 7:22-26).

At God’s decree, all the inhabitants of Canaan, the Perizzites and others, who vowed never to vacate the land of promise for the children of Israel, died together with all their kings.

“And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men and they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire”

(Judges 1:4-8).

The Consequences of Sin and Divine Judgment

When God decreed against His own people for their sins, it also brought destruction because up to 70,000 men died from Dan to Beersheba.

“So, the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer–sheba seventy thousand men. And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, it is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing place of Araunah the Jebusite. And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house”

(2 Samuel 24:15-17).

“And God was displeased with this thing; therefore, he smote Israel o the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.  15And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, it is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.  And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued”

(1 Chronicle 21:7, 14-17).

There was once a terrible king called Azariah. He even imprisoned some prophets of God. But one day, God arose and decreed against him. By that decree, he became a leper and died a leper.

“And the LORD smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house. And Jotham the king’s son was over the house, judging the people of the land. And the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead”

(2 Kings 15:5-7).

There was a city called Samaria where people of God also lived. It happened that the king of Assyria defeated the children of Israel and imported other people into that land. When no one could defeat them in that land, God decreed and lions entered into the cities and by that decree, most of the people were eaten by lions.

“And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. And so, it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore, the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them”

(2 Kings 17:24-25).

At God’s decree, even nations fought for God. At God’s decree, even your best friend or children can be used to bring judgment upon your head. The nature can arise and fight for God at His express decree.

“So, Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead”

(Isaiah 37:37- 38).

Anything can happen to make God’s decree a reality. At God’s decree, victims are helpless.
