The Power of God’s Decrees: Biblical Accounts and Their Implications

God’s Decrees in the Old Testament

When a man called Onan displeased God, God decreed his death and he died instantly. By God’s decree the king of Egypt died together with all the men who sought after the life of Moses. When will you start your own decree? God, the heaven, the earth and all creatures are waiting for your decrees.

“And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life

(Exodus 4:19).

By God’s decree also, hail came down from heaven to smite many people in the land of Egypt.

“And the hails smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and break every tree of the field

(Exodus 9:25).

By God’s decree, all trained hosts of Egyptian’s army died and God disciplined and overthrew them at Red Sea.

“And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, And took off their chariot wheels, that they  heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaohs that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus, the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the seashore. And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses”

(Exodus 14:22-32).

Consequences of Disobedience to God’s Commands

By the decree of God, Joshua arose in battle and discomfited the Amalekites, who came to the battlefield with the edge of the sword.

“And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.  But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.   And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword”

(Exodus 17:11-13).

By God’s decree, Nadab and Abihu, who were called of God as minister and priest, died inside the temple of God by the fire of God’s judgment.

“And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.  And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD”

(Leviticus 10:1-2).

By God’s decree, a particular blasphemer was stoned to death.

“And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses

(Leviticus 24:23).

By God’s decree, the host of the children of Israel who lusted in the wilderness were smitten with a very great plague.

“And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague. And he called the name of that place Kibroth–hattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted”

(Numbers 11:33-34).

By God’s decree, Korah, Dathan and Abiram were buried alive as the ground opened and swallowed them with the members of their families and all that belonged to them.

“And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them: And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.  They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also”

(Numbers 16:31-34).

By God’s decree, 250 men in Israel were consumed by fire for standing against Moses and his ministry.

“And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense

(Numbers 16:35).

By God’s decree, Miriam, the elder sister of Moses, became a leper for daring to talk against his brother, Moses. By God’s decree, idolatrous and immoral people numbering 24,000 died instantly. By God’s decree, the entire males in the nation of Midian were slain in one day together with their king.

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,  17Vex the Midianites, and smite them: For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake”

(Numbers 25:16-18).

“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Avenge the children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt thou be gathered unto thy people… they warred against the Midianites, as the LORD commanded Moses; and they slew all the males

(Numbers 31:1-2, 7).

“And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So, the plague was stayed from the children of Israel”

(Numbers 25:8).

By God’s decree, Balaam, a great prophet, who could see well, was killed by the sword.

““And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So, the plague was stayed from the children of Israel”” (Numbers 25:8).

The Ultimate Authority of God’s Decrees

No matter your status, who or what is protecting you, once God decrees against you, no mortal can deliver you. There was a day that God decreed against all immoral girls and boys in a particular place. And they all died that very day.

“And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp. And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle. And Moses said unto them, have ye saved all the women alive? Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD. Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day. And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all work of goats‘ hair, and all things made of wood. And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses; Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, Everything that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water. And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp”

(Numbers 31:13-24).

Once, there were people born by giants and they grew up as giants. They had never suffered defeat. They all had intimidating sizes and people were very much afraid of them. But one day, at the decree of God, the sons of Lot arose and killed all of them with swords.

“And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.  28Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet; (As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us. But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.  32Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz. And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took. From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us: Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us”

(Deuteronomy 2:26-37).

“And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city”

(Deuteronomy 3:6).
